LogistiX Project - Executive Summary

Date: April 30, 2025

Introduction

LogistiX is conceived as a technology platform designed to address the significant challenges faced by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Kenya's burgeoning e-commerce sector, specifically concerning last-mile delivery. High costs, unreliability, lack of transparency, and difficulties in managing multiple courier relationships hinder SME growth. LogistiX aims to provide an affordable, reliable, and easy-to-use delivery aggregation service, connecting merchants with a network of independent couriers through a unified platform.

Market Opportunity

The global last-mile delivery market is substantial and growing rapidly, driven by e-commerce expansion. Kenya presents a significant opportunity, with a dynamic e-commerce landscape fueled by increasing internet penetration and mobile payment adoption (M-Pesa). However, the current logistics infrastructure, particularly for SMEs, is fragmented and inefficient. Competitors like Glovo, Uber Eats, and Bolt primarily focus on food/grocery delivery or operate different models. While some logistics startups exist (or existed, like Sendy), there remains a clear gap for a dedicated, SME-focused aggregator offering transparent pricing, reliable tracking, and seamless integration.

Proposed Solution: LogistiX Platform

LogistiX will operate as a cloud-native platform featuring:

  • Merchant API & Dashboard: Allowing SMEs to easily create orders, get quotes, track deliveries, and manage their accounts, either via API integration or a user-friendly web interface.
  • Courier Mobile App: Equipping independent couriers (motorbikes initially) with tools to accept jobs, navigate routes, update statuses, and manage earnings.
  • Backend Services: Handling core logic for order management, intelligent courier matching/dispatch, pricing, tracking, notifications (SMS/Push), and user management.
  • Integrations: Connecting with essential third-party services like OpenStreetMap for mapping, Twilio/FCM for notifications, and Safaricom Daraja API for M-Pesa payments.

System Design & Technology

The platform is designed with a modular architecture using Node.js for the backend, PostgreSQL for the database, Redis for caching, React for web dashboards, and Flutter for the cross-platform mobile app. This stack balances performance, cost-effectiveness (leveraging open-source and cloud free tiers initially), and developer productivity. Security is addressed through JWT authentication, RBAC, HTTPS, input validation, and adherence to the Kenya Data Protection Act. The design incorporates scalability considerations for future growth.

Feasibility & Viability

The market research indicates a strong need for the proposed service among Kenyan SMEs. The competitive landscape shows room for a focused aggregator. The proposed revenue models (commission per delivery, potential subscription tiers) appear viable. While initial costs involve development and infrastructure setup, leveraging cloud free tiers and open-source technology minimizes upfront investment. Profitability forecasts suggest a path to sustainability within 2-3 years, contingent on successful merchant and courier acquisition.

Key Recommendations & Next Steps

  1. MVP Development: Proceed with developing the Minimum Viable Product focusing on core features for the Nairobi market.
  2. Courier & Merchant Acquisition: Develop and execute strategies to onboard both SMEs and independent couriers.
  3. Pilot Program: Launch a pilot program with a small group of merchants to gather real-world feedback and refine operations.
  4. Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all operational aspects comply with Kenyan regulations.
  5. Iterative Improvement: Continuously gather user feedback to iterate on the platform features and user experience.

LogistiX has the potential to significantly improve the e-commerce logistics landscape for Kenyan SMEs, fostering growth and efficiency in this vital sector.
